Breastfeeding Tips Every New Mom Should Know

It’s common for moms to prepare for giving birth but many usually forget to prepare for breastfeeding. While you might argue that it’s an instinct thing, it’s actually harder than it looks. It takes patience, a strong resolve, and a whole lot of endurance to successfully go through the birthing pains (literally) of the breastfeeding process. Here are some hacks that you can take note of if you’re planning to go on a breastfeeding journey.

Prepare Your Space for Breastfeeding

Set yourself up for a win by creating an inviting nursing space. Clear your room from any clutter and start organizing your furniture in a way that it helps you move easier. Also, consider purchasing a breastfeeding chair or a rocker to help you make feeding time more comfortable. You’ll be spending most of your time in your nursing nook so might as well elevate it to rid you of unnecessary stress while you give breastfeeding all your effort and energy.

Familarize Yourself with the Process

Learning through reading is different from actually seeing how it’s done. If you have a relative or a friend who is currently breastfeeding, and is willing to show you how it’s done, go and spend time with them! If this is not an option for you, you can always find videos online or read up on what to expect. Familiarizing yourself with the process will make you more confident once you start your journey.

Include Dad in the Lessons

While your husband can’t share your load in breastfeeding, his support and care goes a long way. Include him in your lactation classes so he also knows what to expect when you start breastfeeding. He can also be the one to remind you about the rewards of your sacrifices especially during the times you’d want to give up (Oh, it will come!). Caring for your baby is a partnership and your husband has a lot to contribute even in your breastfeeding story.

Position Nose to Nipple, Belly to Belly

The natural instinct is to position your baby’s mouth directly on your nipple so he/she can drink your milk. One hack to have a successful, deep latch though is to touch your baby’s nose using your nipple. This way, your baby will open his/her mouth wide and latch on correctly. Also check that your belly is against your baby’s belly so your newborn won’t strain his/her head while feeding. Keep this in mind: Nose to nipple, belly to belly!

Have a Nipple Soother On Hand

Practice makes perfect, but through the trial process, you will cry with pain and tiredness. But Mama, we promise that this too shall pass. Make your trial and error bearable by having a nipple soother on hand. Purchase a Lanolin cream of your choice to apply on your future nipple blisters and battle scars so you can have a smoother experience. It pays to be prepared!
