Build a “Yes” Space For Your Toddler!

Baby-proofing your home is one way to make sure that your kids are safe from anything that is potentially harmful like sharp edges or electrical outlets. But more than minimizing hazards, there’s another method to help your little one have a sense of safety and comfort, and that is a “yes” space. What exactly is a “yes” space and how do you create one? Read on to know more, Mom!

Build a "Yes" Space for your toddler

What is a "yes" space?

You might have seen this term already in Montessori resources, but let’s talk about it here some more! A “yes” space is a room or any enclosed area intentionally made for your toddler, so they can freely play, move around, and be left with minimal supervision all while being physically safe. A “yes” space is also where toddlers are encouraged to confidently make discoveries of their own, and gives them a chance to develop a sense of independence without any restrictions. Simply put, this is their territory.

What are the benefits of a "yes" space?

A “yes” space empowers your toddler to develop their independence by having the freedom of playing on their own, and having a sense of autonomy over their actions and decisions. In a “yes” space, they can safely and confidently decide what to do next or what to play with by themselves.

This area can also be a nurturing kind of environment where your little one can feel happy and contented because they can do whatever they want without getting into trouble!

Another perk is that a “yes” space may also give Moms and Dads some peace of mind, because you’re assured that your child is in a safe and comfortable environment whenever you need to take your eyes away from them for a little while.

How do you create a "yes" space?

Choose Any Spacious Area in Your Home

A “Yes” Space can be anywhere in your home that is wide enough for your toddler to move around and play. It can be a spare room or even an area in your living room that you can allot solely for this purpose. Just make sure that this area is hazard-free, and that there’s no risk of anything falling over or breaking.

Use Child-Size Furniture

Toddlers can move freely and comfortably when there are objects and furniture pieces that are made just right for their size. It makes furniture, like tables and chairs, easier for them to use, and it turns the space into something that is truly personalized for them. Plus, it helps prevent any dangerous climbing and tipping over.

Cover Plugs and Electrical Cords

Toddlers can quickly discover where the outlets and cords are, so it’s a good idea to cover these up or block them with furniture or boxes. You can also strategically hide cords by using covers or tapes, so they’re not in plain sight for your little one to pull.

Try Using a Baby Gate

If you’re putting together your yes space in a more open area, let’s say, your living room, consider using a baby gate to safely enclose it. A baby gate makes it easy for you to look over your toddler without interrupting them. It’s not necessarily restrictive because the purpose is to simply make sure that your child is moving around within a safe and secure area.

Provide Age Appropriate Toys and Books

Of course, the little ones need some materials to keep them busy and entertained in their “yes” space. Make sure to include age-appropriate toys (without small parts and choking hazards!) such as soft stuffed animals or toys that encourage motor development. Board books are also great to have because they can’t easily be torn! Do remember to check on the materials and toys in your “yes” space from time to time to make sure they’re still clean and safe for your toddler to use.

So, Mom, will you give the “yes” space a try? Tell us how you feel about it in the comments!
